What's Really Behind Brain Fog?

When people hear “brain health,” they usually think about memory loss or diseases that happen later in life. But brain health is something we’re all using every single day.

It’s your ability to focus during a meeting, remember where you put your keys, staying

patient with your kids, learning something new, finishing a project, or simply make it through the afternoon without feeling mentally drained.

If you’ve ever caught yourself saying, “I can’t think straight,” or “My brain feels foggy,” or “I can’t focus anymore,” your brain is trying to tell you something.

The good news? Your brain is incredibly responsive to how to care for your body.  One of the biggest factors is blood sugar. Your brain uses about 20% of your body’s energy, and its preferred fuel source is glucose. The problem isn’t glucose itself - it’s the roller coaster many of us are on. Think about the days when breakfast is coffee, lunch is whatever you can grab, and by 3pm you’re reaching for something sweet. That quick burst of sugar gives you temporary energy, but it’s often followed by a crash that leaves you feeling tired, irritable, and unable to concentrate. Over time, frequent blood sugar spikes and crashes can affect memory, mood, focus, and even increase inflammation throughout the body.  This is one reason we talk so much about protein, fiber, healthy fats, and balanced meals. They help create steady energy for both your body and your brain.  Another piece of the puzzle is knowing what’s happening beneath the surface.

Sometimes brain fog isn’t simply “being busy.” It can be connected to nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, hormones or other metabolic changes. You can’t always feel those things, but you can often measure them.

That’s why bloodwork can be such a valuable tool. Instead of guessing, we can look at what’s actually happening inside your body. Are your blood sugar markers where they should be? Are you low in nutrients that support brain function? Are there signs of inflammation? The answers can help us create a plan that’s specific to you.

Once we have that information, nutrition coaching helps turn those numbers into everyday habits. Our goal isn’t another restrictive diet - it’s helping you make simple, sustainable changes that support better energy, clearer thinking, and long-term health.  Movement matters, too.

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, supports memory and learning, improves mood, and even encourages the growth of new brain cells. It doesn’t have to be intense to make a difference. A daily walk, strength training, or simply moving more throughout the day all add up.

And because the brain and nervous system are constantly communicating, spinal health plays a role as well. Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper movement to the spine so your nervous system can function as efficiently as possible. While adjustments aren’t a cure for brain fog, a well-functioning nervous system is an important part of helping your body perform at its best.

When you put all of these pieces together - balanced nutrition, stable blood sugar, movement, quality sleep, stress management, and a healthy nervous system - you create an environment where your brain can thrive.

Brain health isn’t isn’t about waiting until something goes wrong. It’s about investing in the way you want to feel today.
