How Whole-Body Health Supports a Strong, Healthy Immune System

When thinking about immune health we usually think about avoiding colds and getting through the flu season. But your immune system is working every day, protecting your body, regulating inflammation, and responding to challenges.

Supporting it isn’t about one supplement or one quick fix. It’s about the whole body.

So where do we start? Start with your gut. You’ve probably heard us say that 70% (or more!) of your immune system is in your gut. While it can be difficult to define the exact percentage, the connection between the gut and immune system is well established.

Your digestive tract contains a significant amount of immune tissue and is constantly interacting with the food you eat and microorganisms that make up your gut microbiome.

Healthy Immune function starts with a healthy foundation - and your gut is part of that foundation. Feed Your Body Well.

Your immune system needs protein, vitamins, minerals, health fats, fiber, and other nutrients to do its job. Think of your nutrition as providing the raw materials your body needs. We can’t consistently put ultra-processed foods into our bodies and expect them to consistently deliver healthy things. That doesn’t mean you need a perfect diet, but it does mean your everyday choices matter.

Prioritize protein, whole foods, colorful fruits and veggies, healthy fats, fiber, and adequate water intake.

Don’t forget about your nervous system! Your immune system communicates constantly with your nervous system and other systems throughout the body. Sleep, stress, movement, and recovery all play a role in keeping those systems functioning well.

This is where chiropractic care can fit into a whole-body approach to wellness. Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system, along with proper movement and function.

So, how often should you get adjusted? As often as helps you feel and function at your best. for wellness maintenance, weekly care may be an appropriate frequency, depending on your individual needs and goals.

What about supplements? Supplements are support, not the foundation. Vitamins D, C, and Zinc play important roles in normal immune function. Supplements can be helpful when additional support is appropriate. But they don’t replace the basics. Eat well. Support your gut. Move. Sleep. Manage stress. Hydrate. Take care of your nervous system.  Your immune system doesn’t suddenly turn on when you get sick. It’s working all the time. Give it what it needs to do its job well. Your immune system isn’t built overnight. It’s built through the choices you make every day.

If you’re doing all the right things and still find yourself getting sick frequently, feeling run down, or simply not feeling like yourself, it may be time to look a little deeper.

Your body is constantly giving you information. Your chiropractor can help you take a closer look at the bigger picture - from your nutrition and movement to your nervous system, lifestyle, and looking at your bloodwork and other wellness markers.
